the Depot building was abandoned in 1965, and after 30 years of neglect and abuse, the building was boarded up in shambles. Walls, floors and windows were largely broken or missing. A group of concerned Stuyvesantonians came together with a vision to return the building to its former glory. Walls were rebricked; the floor relaid; windows and moulding were milled to match the originals. Eventually, a wood stove was added and electricity plumbed in. In 2021, a pellet stove was added, and this past year, cabinets and a mobile sink created a much-needed kitchen.

As you can see, the pile of rubble left in the mid nineties has been rebuilt and restored toward its former glory. And there is still much to do to make it fully equipped community center. There are plans to create a sitting area in the center room where locals might meet for coffee, sharing stories, poetry and music in a very informal setting. Below are renderings offering some hopes and dreams for the space.
